The appeal of Puccini was his ability to meld all of the theatrical elements with his music. The characters come across as real people. He takes the audience on a journey of human emotions that they can relate to. The growth of characters in each opera is felt by the audience. These are the things that opera goers love. I would recommend anyone make a Puccini opera their first experience.

While I know music fairly well, and enjoy opera (La Boheme was the first opera I saw), I wouldn't say I'm an expert on opera.  Still, I'm rather confident that the correct answer is D.  Puccini certainly was different and innovative for his time.  He was masterful with melody lines and with drama.  I hope this helps you appreciate Puccini more.
