For a rectangle of a given perimeter, the square has the greatest area.

 

x represents length

y represents width

 

x + y = 11

y = 11- x

A = xy

A = x(11 - x)

A = 11x - x²

A = -x² + 11x

Maximum at -11/-2, or 5.5
