Question

Tess makes beverages at a local coffee shop. She gets paid $7 an hour and earns an extra 20% from tips. She works for 5 hours, and after her shift her boss gives her a one-time $18 bonus. When she gets home, Tess lends her brother 20% of her earnings from the day. How much money does Tess have left?

Brother takes 20% of earnings.

 

Start by figuring out how much she worked from just her hours.  7 x 5 = 35.  

 

Then figure out how much to add for tip by multiplying the hourly total by 0.20 (20% in decimal form).  $35 x 0.20 = $7.  

 

Her new total is then $7 + $35 = $42.  Then add the $18 bonus => $42 + $18 = $60.  

 

If her brother takes 20%, find 20% of $60, $60 x 0.2 = $12.

 

Now she has $60 - $12 left.
