Each of my daughters has as many brothers as sisters, but each of my sons has three times as many sisters as brothers. How many children do I have?

G represents number of girls

B represents number of boys

 

G - 1 = B           one girl cannot be her own sister

3(B - 1) = G        number of brothers (minus one) is three time the girls

 

G = B + 1

3(B - 1) = B +1

3B - 3 = B + 1

2B = 4

B = 2
