The Pickle Pink Paint Company is making an experimental purple mix out of 8 gallons of red paint and 6 gallons of blue paint. The red paint costs them $1.25 more per gallon than the blue paint. If the total price of 14 gallons of purple paint is $62.50, how much does one gallon of red paint cost?

If a gallon of blue paint costs x dollars, then a gallon of red is x + 1.25 dollars, right?

 

Since the 8 and 6 gallons make 14 gallons of purple, we're set, but what's the cost of each gallon?

 

If a gallon of blue was $2, then 6 gallons would cost 6($2), or $12.

 

Instead, a can of blue costs x dollars, so 6 cost 6x dollars. In the same aspect, 8 cans of red cost 8(x + 1.25). If we distribute, 8 cans cost 8x + 10 dollars.

 

Since the total cost is $62.50...

 

6x + 8x + 10 = 62.50

14x = 52.50

x = 3.75

 

Since a gallon of blue costs $3.75, a gallon of red costs $3.75 + $1.25 = $5.00.
