Wendy - Fear not!  Here is another way to solve your problem:

 

2(x+1)/3 = 6/5        Solve for x

 

1st -  using the order of operations - simplify the left side of the equation

    2x+2   =   6           (Remember  2(x+1) is simplified by the Distributive Property  2 times x  +  2 timed 1)

        3          5           

 

2nd - 1st step to solve a proportion is to cross multiply

    (2x+2)5 = 6(3) 

 

3rd - Simplify each side of the equation

      10x+10 = 18

 

4th - Solve the equation for x    (Part A. subtract 10 from both sides)

      10x +10 = 18

             -10    -10

                                               (Part B. divide both sides by 10, then simplify)

        10x = 8  

        10     10

 

           x = 4/5

[2(x + 1)]/3 = 6/5

           ⇓

2(x/3) + 2/3 = 6/5

 

Multiply by 3

 

2x + 2 = 3*(6/5) = 18/5

 

Subtract 2 from each side

 

2x = (18/5) - 2 = (18/5) - (10/5) = [(18-10)/5] = 8/5

 

Divide by 2

 

x = (8/5)/2 = 4/5
