In a survey of 36 people taken at the grocery store, 22 said they were shopping for meat, 17 said they were picking up vegetables, and 2 said they were buying neither item. How many people were shopping for both meat and vegetables?

The formula for this type of questions is   Group 1 + Group 2 + Neither - Both = Total

 

Here, Group 1 is meat shoppers, Group 2 is vegetable shoppers

 

So:  22 + 17 + 2 - Both = 36

41 - Both = 36

Both = 5.

 

5 people were shopping for both meat and vegetables.
