How much mulch will you need to cover a rectangular garden that is 20 feet by 30 feet with a 3-inch layer of mulch?

you can set this one up as a volume calculation just be sure to convert the height over into feet to keep the units consistent!

Volume = length x width x height

= 20 feet x 30 feet x (3/12) feet

=150 ft^3

meaning that you need 150 cubic feet of mulch

This is a volume problem.

 

The volume of a rectangular prism is LWH

 

V = 20x30x(1/4)

 

Note the length and width measurements were given in feet but the depth (height) measurement was given in inches (3"). Since we want the units to be the same, I'm using 1/4' rather than 3".

 

V = 150 ft³ <---  needed volume of mulch
