The length of a rectangle is 7in greater than its width, the perimeter is 50 inches find the length and width of the rectangle.

W = width

L = length = 7+W

P = perimeter = 2L + 2W = 50

 

1) Substitute the length equation into the perimeter equation

 

2(7+W) + 2W = 50

 

2) Solve for W

 

14 + 2W + 2W = 50

4W = 50 - 14

W = 36/4 = 9

 

3) Knowing W, compute the length with the length equation

 

L = 7 + W = 7 + 9 = 16

 

4) Check you answer by using the perimeter equation

 

2L + 2W = 50

2(16) + 2(9) = 50

32 + 18 = 50

50 = 50
