Now, remember definitions:

  The y-intercept is the point where the line crosses the y-axis (that is, where x=0).

        When x=0,

              4(0) + 3y = 12

                        y = 4

             The y-intercept is the point (0,4)

 

   The x-intercept is the point where the line crosses the x-axis (that is, where y=0).

         When y=0,

               4x  +  3(0) = 12

                       x = 3

             The x-intercept is the point (3,0)

Kim this linear equation is in Standard Form:  Ax+By=C  where A, B and C are integers and A>0

 

There are two ways to find the y-intercept

 

1. To solve the equation for y which puts the equation into Slope Intercept form: y=mx+b

 

4x +3y=12     Subtract 4x from both sides

3y=-4x+12     Divide each term by 3

y=-4/3+4       The y-intercept is the b which is 4

 

ANSWER:  The y-intercept is (0,4)

 

 

2.  In Standard Form:  Ax+By=C   the y-intercept is C/B

4x +3y=12

A=4

B=3

C=12

 

Therefore, the y-intercept is C/B=12/3 =4

ANSWER: The y-intercept is (0,4)

 

Both ways are great.  The easier method is the second way (if you can remember the formula)
