You have a positive 5 and you are taking away from it (minus) a positive 9.
This is merely a subtraction problem.
(+5)-(+9)= 5-9 = -4
Whenever you have an addition or subtraction or problem, look at the signs.
If the signs are the same... Add the total of the numbers and give the sum
the same sign as the original numbers:
-2 - 4 = -6
2 + 4 = 6
If the signs are opposite... 1 is positive and 1 is negative ... subtract the
smaller number from the larger number and give the answer the same
sign as whichever number was larger:
2 - 7 = -5
7 - 2 = 5
-7 + 2 = -5
-2 + 7 = 5
If you see +(-) or -(+) such as in this problem.. the number after will
be negative.
+3 - (+8) = 3 - 8 = -5
3 + (-8) = 3 - 8 = -5
-3 + (-4) = -3 - 4 = -7
-3 - (+4) = -3 - 4 = -7
