Successful at helping students improve in math!
There are three ways to solve this:
1) Graph the two lines and locate the point of intersection by visually estimating it and then verifying it in each equation.
2) Solve the system using substitution.
3) Solve the system using elimination.
I will show you (2). Solve 4x + y = -4 for y: y = -4x - 4. Substitute this into the first equation and solve for x:
x + 2(-4x - 4) = 6
x - 8x - 8 = 6
-7x = 14
x = -2
Plug this into y = -4x - 4 to get y:
y = -4(-2) - 4 = 8 - 4 = 4
Verify this solution by direct substitution into the original system. It will check correctly.
The correct solution is (-2, 4).
