This question is flawed or typed incorrectly. When the plane starts out at 500 meters thats actually 0.5 km. It is impossible for the plane to descend to 11km. 

 

Either the units are not correctly written or descend should be changed to ascend. Also

 

11km= 11,000 m

 

500 m= 0.5 km
