A pile of newspapers in Ms. McGarth's art class was 17 3/4 inches high.  Each consecutive week, for the next 5 weeks, the height of the pile of newspapers increased by 8 7/12 inches.  What was the height, in inches, of the pile after 3 weeks?

h= 17 3/4 = 17.75 when t=0

h(t) = 17.75 + 8. 7/12 times w where w = numberof weeks

h(3) = 17.75 + 3(8 7/12)

= 17.75 + 24 + 7/4

= 24 + 17.75 + 1.75

= 24 + 19.5

= 43.5 = 43 1/2 inches high after 3 weeks
