Question

Suppose  you run 2 miles from your house to a friends house at a speed of 7 mi/hr.  When the time comes to return home, you are tired and walk the same 2 miles at 3 mi/hr.  How long did you spend running to your friends house?  How long did you spend walking home?

The distance formula is distance = rate*time or d=rt

 

Rearranging to solve for time we have   t = d/r

 

Running to:  t = 2miles/7mph = 2/7 hours

                   For minutes: (2/7 hours)(60 min/hour) ≅ 17.14 mins

 

Walking from:  t = 2miles/3mph = 2/3 hours

                  For minutes: (2/3 hours)(60 min/hr) = 40 mins
