Pam has 2 part time jobs. At one job she works as a cashier and makes $8 an hour, at her second job she works a a tutor and makes $12 dollars an hour. One week she worked 30 hours and made $268. How many hours did she spend at each job?

Let's set this up.

 

C = # hours Pam works as a cashier

T = # hours Pam works as a tutor

 

One week she worked 30 hours

C + T = 30

also

C = 30-T

 

and made $268

8C + 12T = 268

 

Let's substitute 30-T for C in the above equation

 

8(30-T) + 12T = 268

240 - 8T + 12T = 268

 

Combine terms

240 + 4T = 268

and

4T = 28

T = 7

and since C = 30-T

C = 30-7=23

 

So Pam worked 23 hours as a cashier and 7 hours as a tutor.
