It may seem like I'm playing the game, "I went to the store and bought Apples, Bananas, Cookies, ... and Doughnuts."
The Decimal Number system is a positional number system. We'd have to do some research to find out how to represent 54,927.2382 with Roman Numerals !
The digit 9 in hundreds place means that the number has 900 (or 9 hundreds) as part of it.
Don't confuse this with the digit 3 in hundredths place. It means that the number has 3/100 (or 3 hundredths) as part of it. This seems to be one reason this number is written with 4 digits after the decimal point.
So, there is:
ones place and a decimal point
tens place vs. tenths place
hundreds place vs. hundredths place
. . .
millions place vs. millionths place
. . .
Notes:
I usually say, "Just getting the correct answer is never enough."
