A new Toyota RAV4 costs $23,500. The car's value depreciates linearly to $18,823 in three years time. Write a formula which expresses its value, V in terms of its age, t in years.

t1 = 0,  V1 = $23500

t2 = 3years, V2 = $18823

slope, m = (V2 - V1)/(t2 - t1) = (18823-23500)/(3-0)=-4677/3= -$1559/year

V = -1559t + c, at t = 0, V = 23500

23500 =-1559*0 +c

23500 = c

 

∴ V(t) = 23500 - 1559t
