The sum of two consecutive odd integers is 108. What is the largest number?

The difference between consecutive odd (or even) integers is two.

 

Let one integer be x.  The other (and larger one) is x + 2.

 

Their sum is 108.

 

x + x + 2 = 108

 

Simplify.

 

2x + 2 = 108

 

2x = 106

 

x = 53.

 

That's the smaller odd integer, though.  We were asked for the larger.

 

The number we want is x + 2, or 55.
