Let's see if this helps:
5 • 6 = 10 • x - Kyle has 5 notebooks (1 for each class) and he puts 6 stickers
on each one
x (number of sheets) with (•) 10 stickers on each sheet
These things have to = because the total stickers have to equal
the peeled off stickers on the notebooks
30 = 10 • x Now, do the multiplication on the left side of the equation (5
times 6 equals 30) Rewrite the problem
30 / 10 = 10 • x / 10 Now to get the x all by itself, you have to do the opposite
- the opposite of multiplication is division
Divide both sides by 10 - 30 / 10 = 3 and the 10 multiplied
and divided on the right cancel each
other out and you are just left with the x on the right side.
3 = x
Now, plug in the number and see if it works:
- 5 notebooks times 6 stickers = 30 stickers
- 3 sheets times 10 stickers on each sheet = 30 stickers
