Question

A total of 500 tickets were sold for the school play. They were either adullt tickets or student tickets. There were 50 more student tickets sold than adult tickets. How many adult tickets were sold?

First, lets assign x to the number of adult tickets and y to the number of student tickets.  

 

You will have one equation that represents the total of tickets 

 

x + y = 500

 

Now the questions tells you that there are 50 more student tickets than there are adult tickets.

 

So y = 50+x 

Now substitute for y in the first equation and solve for x. You will have the number of adult tickets sold.  

 

x + (50+x)=500

Let's say adult tickets = x

 

If there are 50 more student tickets sold than adult tickets, then student tickets = x+50

 

So to find out how many adult tickets were sold, you simply solve for x, as follows:

 

x+(x+50)=500

2x+50=500

2x=450

x=225

 

There were 225 adult tickets sold.
