A truck left town at noon and traveled at a uniform rate of 45 mph. At 1:00 P.M. the same day, a sedan set out from the same place a t a uniform rate 10mph greater. At what time did the sedan overtake the truck?

The truck left at noon going 45 mph

The car left at 1pm going 55 mph

when did the car catch up to the truck?

distance = rat of speed times time traveled.

d = rt = 45(t) = 55(t-1) = 55t- 55

55t -45t = 55

10t = 55

t = 55/10 = 5.5 hours

they meet at 5:30 pm

in 5 hours 30 minutes the truck goes 45 x 5.5 = 247.5 miles

in 4 hours 30 minutes the car goes 55 x 4.5 = 247.5 miles

noon plus 5.5 hours = 5:30 pm

1pm plus 4.5 hours = 5:30 pm when they meet
