even if the original data that you are analyzing is discrete (like an exam score), the average itself is generally treated as a continuous variable for the purpose of analysis and modeling because it can take on any value within a range

Doing a stat lab. Need to know if the average of test scores and average spent on pupils is a discrete or continuous variable and I keep confusing myself trying to figure it out.

In general an average (mean) can take on values that are not possible in your sample or population. As such they can be considered continuous.
Even if e.g. exam scores are whole numbers the mean does not have to be.
