The math club is backing pies for the bake sale . The fruit pie recipe calls for twice as many peaches as nectarines . If it takes a total amount of 168 pieces of fruit for all the pies , how many nectarines are needed?

Number of peaches + number of nectarines =168 

p + n = 168

Twice as many peaches as nectarines

p = 2n  plug this into  the first equation

 

2n + n = 168

3n = 168            ---> n = 56

They will need 56 nectarines and  112 peaches
