Word problem about mowing

Bob mows lawns during the summer. On the weekdays, he gets $36 per lawn. On the weekends,

he gets $56 per lawn. If Bob mowed 14 lawns and earned $764, how many lawns did he mow on

the weekdays and how many on the weekends?

Barry E.

Simultaneous Equation
Let weekday mows be X
Let weekend mows be Y

x + y = 14
$36x + $56Y = $764

new equation..so as to eliminate X from both equations

Multiply x + y = 14 by 36
Gives 36x + 36y = 504

Now two new equations which are subtracted from each other...

36x + 56y = 764
36x + 36y = 504

Answer 20y = 260..divide by 20 both sides of equation

y = 13

x must equal 1 as 14 lawns were mowed

Therefore 1 weekday lawn and 13 weekend lawns mowed.

1 times $36 plus 13 times $56 = $764
