X-0+4 = x-4 or x+4??

Question: x - 0 + 4 = x + 4 or is it x - 4 ??

Answer: This is a problem that uses our famous mnemonic PEMDAS.

x - 0 + 4 means first take away 0 from x which is x, and then add 4 since our order of operations is left to right for addition and subtraction. When we take away 0 from( or even add 0 to) any number we do nothing to that number.  So we get x - nothing + 4. This is x + 4.

 

Possible Confusion: I think the place you could confuse the signs is if the question was x -(0 + 4). Here you would distribute the negative and get x - 0 - 4 which is x - 4.

look at the left side of your equation: x minus zero + 4..."Minus zero" does nothing...so just ignore it...that simplifies the left side to be x - 4, and that NEVER could equal x + 4.

You have x - 0 + 4 , so it is like you are subtracting 0 from x then adding 4 to x. When you subtract 0 you don't change anything, then you add the 4 to get x + 4.
