x - 0 + 4 = x + 4. The student doesn't have an equation. The student is asking whether x - 0 + 4 simplifies to x - 4 or to x + 4.

It is like I am saying, x - 0 + 4, I want to take 0 from x then give it 4. Taking away 0 doesn't change so it is like I am just adding 4 to x, so it is x + 4.
