WO = WP + 17

WO + WP = 253

 

Substituting the first equation for WO into the second equation:

 

(WP + 17) + WP =253

2*WP + 17 =253

 

2*WP + 17 - 17 = 253 - 17

2*WP = 236

2*WP / 2 = 236 / 2

 

WP = 118 pounds of Peppercorns
