The sum of 2 numbers is 115

The larger number is 22 more than twice the smaller number. Find the 2 numbers(I use X as the larger number and Y as the smaller number)

Let the larger number be x, and the smaller number be y

 

From the descriptions given above we have:

 

x+y=115

x=22+2y...rearranging it we get x-2y=22

 

So, we do have the following systems of equations 

 

x+y=115
x-2y=22

 

Subtract eq 2 from eq 1

 

3y = 93

y=31

 

plugging 31 in place of y in one of the equations we get:

 

x+y = 115

x+31=115

x=115-31

x= 84

 

Therefore the two numbers are x=84, and y=31.
