Graphing Inequalities

Question

Cherries cost $4/lb. Grapes cost $2.50/lb. You can spend no more than $10 on fruit but you must buy at least 3 pounds of fruit. How many pounds of each fruit can you buy?

g represents pounds of grapes

3 - g represents pounds of cherries

 

2.5g + 4(3 - g) = 10       distribute

2.5g + 12 - 4g = 10        combine like terms

-1.5g + 12 = 10              subtract 12 form both sides

-1.5g = -2                     divide both sides by -1.5

g = 1 1/3

 

Buy one and one-third pounds of grapes and one and two-thirds pounds of cherries.
