y - y₁ = m(x - x₁)  where m=5 and (x₁,y₁) = (-1,6)  and solve for y

Another way to do this problem is to just use the slope formula

 

m=(y₂-y₁)/(x₂-x₁)

 

with m=5, (x₁,y₁)=(1,6), and (x₂,y₂)=(x,y) which is a generic point on the line:

 

5=(y-6)/(x-1)

 

Then just solve for y (hint: start by clearing the fraction).

 

It's pretty much the same process as Thomas E.'s answer but you don't need to memorize any new formulas if you already know the slope formula. (If you're doing this for school before the slope formula, your book is going in a weird order.)
