Question

Rectangular floor measurements:
Length= 9m
Width= 4.5

'Toji is going to cover the floor with floor boards.
Each floor board is 0.1 wide, and 1.5m long.

Work out the smallest number of floor boards Toji needs.'

The total area of the floor is (9)(4.5) = 40.5 m²

 

Each board has area (0.1)(1.5) = 0.15 m²

 

40.5 ÷ 0.15 = 270 boards

 

Note:  usually, you would need extra material due to cutting the boards to make everything fit.  However, in this problem, 4.5 ÷ 0.1 = 45 and   9÷1.5 = 6.  So, if we lay (lengthwise) 45 rows of 6 boards each, we get an exact fit with no cutting needed.  In reality, there is a narrow space where the boards meet, so there probably will be some cutting and you will need some extra boards to complete the job.
