Let x = smaller integer then the larger integer is 5 + 3x
the sum is 49 so the equation would be
x + 5 + 3x = 49 Combine like terms
4x + 5 = 49 subtract 5 from both sides
4x = 44 divide both sides by 4
x = 11 This is the smaller number. The larger number is 5 + 3x = 5 + 3(11) = 5 + 33 = 38, the larger number
CHECK
The sum of the 2 numbers is 49.
11 + 38 = 49 √
