f(x) = x² - 4

 

This is a positive parabola with a vertex and y-intercept of (0, 0) that is shifted vertically 4 units down.  The new vertex and y-intercept under this translation is (0, -4).

 

This means that every y-coordinate on the graph f(x) = x²  is decreased by 4.
