x² - y² = 39            difference of squares

(x + y)(x - y) = 39   substitute

(x + y)(3) = 39        divide both sides by 3

x + y = 13

 

x + y = 13

x - y = 3                add

 

2x = 16                 divide both sides by 2

x = 8

y = 5
