A sales tax rate of 8% means 8 pennies out of 100 pennies is charged for tax.

 

100 pennies is $1. So for every dollar you're charged $0.08.  A $100 item will have a tax of $8.00

 

8% is equivalent to "8 out of 100" or simply (8/100)

 

Also:

 

To solve for a ratio into terms of %:

 

Equate the ratio (a/b) with (c/100)

 

i.e. (a/b)=(c/100)

 

solve for c: (a/b)*100= c%

 

to solve for any ratio:

 

(a/b) = (c/d)

 

Cross multiply and/or divide to get any variable of interest.
