Hi Bethany, let x be the number of pounds of apples Maria picks. Then Andre picks 3x or three times as many pounds as Maria picks. Jane picks 2 times as many as Andre picks or 6x.
Set up an equation: x + 3x + 6x = 840
Solve for x:
10x = 840
Divide both sides by 10 giving:
x = 84.
Then Maria picks 84 pounds of apples. Andre picks 3 times as many apples as Maria or 252 pounds of apples. Jane picks 2 times as many apples as Andrea or 504 pounds of apples.
Check: 84 + 252 + 504 = 840
840 = 840, values check.
Andre picks 252 pounds of apples.
