Jeff is training for a walkathon. He walked 8.84 miles at an average speed of 3.4 miles per hour. Then he walked for an additional 1.6 hours at the same speed. How many hours did Jeff walk in all? Show your work.

Hi Dalinda, the first step is to determine how long it took Jeff to walk the 8.84 miles.

 

This is an application of the D(istance) = T(ime) * R(ate) formula.

 

Here we know the distance, 8.84 miles and we know the rate, 3.4 miles per hour. To find the time, all we have to do is divide the distance by the rate  to find the time or 8.84 / 3.4, which equals 2.6 hours.

 

If Jeff walked an additional 1.6 hours at the same speed, he walked a total of 4.2 hours.

To figure out the total number of hours walked, let's figure out the number of hours from each part.

 

1) time = distance / speed, so
