By default, writing a proportion gives you the answer in fraction form!
Let's say there is a 50ft tree and there is a 6ft tall person. The person has a shadow that is 18ft long, but you need to know the length of the tree's shadow. Here is how you would set it up: you would have both the numerator and denominator having the same unit while the fraction represents one object.
For this proposed problem I would set up one of the fractions for the tree. The numerator would have the length over the shadow. The other fraction would have the length of the person over the shadow. This makes it so the numerators have the same unit (actual length of object in ft) while the denominators also share a unit (the shadow length in ft).
Here are the fractions with the numbers in place: 50ft/x ft = 6ft/18ft. So now to solve for x, you cross multiply. This is done by making a zigzag pattern with the math by multiplying diagonally first before dividing the numbers so you would end up at the spot where x would be. So here, you would multiply 18 by 50 (which is 900) and then divide by 6. The answer here would be 150ft (900÷6=150).
