Solving age problems (question in description)

Question

Louise is four times as old as Maria. However, 6 years from now she will be only three times as onld as Maria. Find their ages.

Louise is 4 time as old as Maria: l=4m

Louise in 6 years: l+6

Maria in 6 years: m+6

In 6 years, Louise will be 3 times as old as Maria:

l+6=3(m+6)

Substitute l=4m into this equation: 

4m+6=3m+18

m=12 (Maria's age)

 

l=4*12

l=48 (Louise's age)
