If six times a temperature is increased by 60 degrees, it is the same as 12 times the temperature. Write and solve an equation to determine the temperature.

6 times means we multiply a number by 6.  Increased means we add.  If we something the same as another, it means that they are equal.  Putting these concepts together, we can write an equation in terms of T and solve.

 

Let T =  temperature

 

 

6T + 60 = 12T

 

 

Subtract 6T on both sides of the equation.

 

60 = 6T

 

 

Divide both sides of the equation by 6.

 

10 = T

 

 

The temperature is 10 degrees.  Wow that's cold.
