A box of laundry detergent is on sale for $6.50. If this price represents a 40% discount from the original price, what is the  original price to the nearest cent

Let original price = P

Sale price is discounted 40% so it 60% of the original price = 0.6P = 6.50

So P = 6.50/0.6 = $10.83

Let the original price = X

 

The question says that the price is $6.50 after subtracting 40% of X from X.

 

40% = 0.4 (after moving the decimal two places to the left)

 

So, X - 0.4X = 6.50

 

      0.6X = 6.50

 

Divide both sides by 0.6 --> X = $10.83
