Examples of data sets that are not normally distributed are income and home prices. That is why they usually talk about the median values rather then the mean because the distributions are highly skewed. Median is the measure of central tendency for highly skewed (non-normal) data sets. If you want to try to normalize one of those two types of data sets, you would normally try to transform them using the natural log.
