a bus traveled on a level rod for 3 hours at an average speed of 20 mph faster than it traveled on a winding road. The time spend on the winding road was 4 hours. Find the average speed on the level road if the entire trip was 305 miles

Let x = speed on winding road

 

Then x + 20 = speed on level road

 

Distance = (Rate)(Time)

 

Distance on level road + Distance on winding road = Total distance

 

3(x+20) + 4x = 305

 

3x + 60 + 4x = 305

 

               7x = 245

 

                x = 35 mph

 

The speed on the winding road is 35 mph and the speed on the level road is 55 mph.
