You want to take lessons. The cost of the introductory lesson if 5/8 the cost of each additional lesson which are $80. You have a budget of $375. How many lessons can you take, and how much money will you have left over?

The cost of the introductory lesson is 80*5/8=50. Now we calculate total cost of lessons to be 50+80(x-1) = 375 for x lessons.

50+80x-80=375

80x-30=375

80x=405

x=5.0625

 

So you can have 5 lessons with the first costing 50 and the additional four costing 80 each, totaling $370 with $5 left.
