There are two unknowns (adult and child tickets) so you have to use two equations to figure this one out.
The first equation is total tickets, use a as adult tickets and c and child tickets:
a + c = 164; given the total number of tickets sold is 164.
Second is the total amount for tickets sold is the cost of each ticket times the number sold, so
6.20 * c + 9.70 * a = 1251.30; given cost of adult and child tickets and the total sales for the day.
solve the first equation for c to get c = 164 - a
Substitute in this c value into the second equation to yield:
6.20 (164 - a) + 9.70 * a = 1251.30
1016.80 - 6.20a + 9.70a = 1251.30
3.50a = 234.50
a = 67, the number of adult tickets sold.
