Difference between scores and the amount of each.

Team tackle beat team sack by 7 points. If their scores totaled 89, find the individual team scores.

Let s = team sack's score.  Since team tackle beat team sack by 7 points, team tackle scored s+7 points.  Their scores total 89 points, so let's add them:

 

s + s + 7 = 89

 

2s + 7 = 89

 

Solve for s.

if x and y be the individual scores, then x+y = 89      x-y = 7

If we add the two equations, 2x = 89+7= 96 therefore x= 48    and y= 89-48 = 41

so the individual scores are 48 and 41.
