I need to know the steps to the question.

   x - y  =   8             (rearrange the first equation)

     x   =  48              (divide both sides by 2)

 

Now, use the two equations again:

    x + y = 88

    x  - y =  8

  Is 48 + 40 = 88   ?   yes

(1) We let x = one number,

 

(2) We can translate words into math expressions:

 

"is" means =

"more" means +

 

So the phrase: "One number is 8 more than a second number" can be written as:

 

x = 8 + y (where y is another letter we can use to represent the second unknown number).

 

(3) We also know that their sum is 88, so x + y = 88.

 

(4) This gives us the following two equations with two unknowns:

 

x = 8 + y

x + y = 88

Substituting 8 + y into the second equation for x, we get:

 

(8 + y) + y = 88

8 + 2y = 88

2y = 80
