When he runs against the wind, Ricky can run 16 km in 2 h. With the wind, he can run 5/4 of this distance in 2h. Find Ricky's running rate and the rate of the win. Assume that both are constant.

Let x = running rate with no wind

     y = speed of wind

 

speed with the wind = x+y

speed against the wind = x-y

 

Distance = (Rate)(Time)  

 

So, 2(x-y) = 16

     2(x+y) = (5/4)(16)

 

Simplifying, we get x - y = 8

                           x + y = 10

 

Add the equations to get 2x = 18

 

So, x = 9 kph

     y = 1 kph
