A 7th grade math question.

A square pool has volume 3861 cubic feet ,and depth 11 feet. a couple builds a couple builds a fence 3.5 feet high around the pool. How many square feet of fencing surround the pool?

A square pool lets us know that the length and the width will be identical. We are given the depth 11ft. we know the volume is equal to 3861, which in turn gets derived from length x width x height (depth). 

 

So, the equation is 11x^2 = 3861

 

3861/11= 351 

 

the square root of 351 is roughly 18.73.

 

This gives us the dimensions around the pool, which is 18.73ft for each side. Thus, each side will be 18.73ft x 3.5ft of area, which equals 65.55 square feet. You have 4 sides to enclose the pool multiply this by for,and you arrive at the square feet surrounding the pool (65.55 x 4 = 262.22 ft sq.)

volume/depth, or 351 square feet.

Let sqrt be the square root function

Since the pool is square, the length of a side is sqrt(351), or 18.735

So the perimeter of the pool is 4s = 74.94 ft

If the fence is 3.5 ft high, the number of square feet of fencing needed is

3.5 x 74.94 = 262.29 square feet
