If x is to 5 as y is to 8, what is the value of x when y=2

If x is to 5 as y is to 8 then...

 

x/5 = y/8

 

So when y = 2

 

x/5 = 2/8

x/5 = 1/4

Multiply both sides by 5

5(x/5)=5(1/4)

x = 5/4

 

If you need a decimal answer just divide 5 by 4... x = 1.25

x    /    5   =  y    /   8

 

x = 5y / 8  when y = 2

 

x = 5(2) / 8

x = 10 / 8

x = 5 / 4
